Dick Spady: A Life of Vision and Values is the life story of Richard Spady, the co-founder of Dick's Drive-In Restaurants in Seattle, Washington. This book traces Dick's life from his early years in Oregon, to his service in World War II and Korea, to the founding of his popular restaurants and his ground breaking research and advocacy for civic engagement. Dick's Drive-Ins are the longest continually operated fast food restaurants in the Pacific Northwest and are cultural icons for Seattle and most recently Edmonds. This history paints a brief story of Dick's life, his vision, and the values which have enriched not only the Seattle community, but the lives of others around the world.

About the Author
Dick Spady Co-founder: Dick’s Drive-In Restaurants, Inc. Dick Spady was born in 1923 and reared in Portland, Oregon. He graduated in January 1941 from Grant High School and went to work for the Union Pacific Railroad as a telegrapher/towerman. During World War II he served in the South Pacific with the Seabees, the Navy’s “Construction Battalions” (CB’s). In 1944 he was transferred to Pearl Harbor where he met his future partner in Dick’s Drive-In Restaurant, Warren Ghormley. Dick attended Oregon State University from 1946-50 under the GI Bill. He majored in Business and Technology and also took advanced ROTC with the newly created U.S. Air Force. Dick graduated in 1950 and went to work for Commerce Investment in Portland; a real estate development company. Dick was recalled to active duty for the Korean War in 1952 and served at Itazuke Air Base in southern Japan where he was responsible for the food supply of about 10,000 troops. Dick stayed in the Air Force Reserve for 29 years and retired in 1967 with the rank of Lt. Colonel. In 1953 Dick returned to Portland and decided to move to Seattle and open a restaurant in partnership with Warren Ghormly and B.O.A. “Tom” Thomas, a dentistry professor at the U.W. On January 28, 1954 the first of six Dick’s Drive-Ins opened on NE 45th Street in Wallingford. Dick’s celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2014. Today Dick’s Drive-Ins’ Wallingford Restaurant is the oldest continuously operated fast food restaurant in Washington.
