Summer Heat, by David P. Hope

“How did I get here?” Those were the words that David Hope thought as his boat, Summer Heat, was tossed in a storm on its way to the Bahamas. This book is the true story of his life, from his first experiences in sailing through his career as a Chesterfield County, Virginia Police Officer up until his ship was caught in a devastating storm. It’s a story of humor, heroics, good luck and bad luck that recounts the tale of David and his crew (including Jammer the Wonder Dog), as they struggled to survive on Summer Heat. When disaster strikes, you need everything you have learned in life.

I could not put it down
By ranger
I love the way that Dave integrated his police story with his love of sailing story. I thought I knew the story of the loss of "Summer Heat" but I only knew the condensed version. Wow! What an adventure. This is a must read.

Awesome Read!
By Robert A. Fielder
I know Dave as a friend. He has talked a little about his experiences, but nothing compares with this true life story of his police career and his ill fated trip to the Bahamas when he lost his boat and almost lost his life.

You do not need to be a sailor to enjoy this book. Dave explains all in laymen terms.

You will chuckle, smile, experience a sea rescue and perhaps cry at the loss of his friend, Jammer...I did

A great true story!
By Mike Marrion
I first met Dave Hope in 1978 when I got out of the Chesterfield County Police academy. I worked with him, then for him, for many years until his retirement. We pretty much lost contact after that with the exception of the occasional picnic for retirees. As young invincibles, we enjoyed motorcycles, the water and frosty malt beverages. Somehow we are still here to tell our tales. Having been on a few excursions on his “blow bote”, as I called it, I’m glad I never got the bug to be pushed around by a wind that was unpredictable and always seemed to be blowing the wrong way. Sailing seemed like a lot of work and I couldn’t catch any fish while we were heeling over. I knew of his misadventure, but none of the details until I read this book. I finished it one sitting as I couldn’t put it down. Although unfamiliar with all the lines and sails on a “blow bote”, Dave tells this harrowing tale in a manner that a non-sailor can still clearly visualize. If it were not for the fact that he wrote this exceptional account, I wouldn’t have bet anyone would have survived this oceanic adventure. It could have had a significantly different ending. I’m glad he didn’t invite me, because if he told me he had a “bote” full of beer and we were going to the Bahamas, I may have been tempted. As Dave was always very serious about the finer points of sailing and I was so cavalier, I wouldn’t have made a suitable crewmember. Thank goodness for that! This is a great read and I thoroughly enjoyed the adventure. RIP Jammer, you were a “wonder dog”.

Thank you Valerie Frankel
By Rosa Kohler
I was sure that some intrepid geek had to have gone through the episodes of the new BBC series looking for canon references, and I was right. As a huge fan of Holmes pastiches, I appreciate this reference work despite the typos. It will be a major help in my own research work.

OCD Fan's Delight!
By Sherry B.
I thought I was reasonably knowledgeable about the Doyle canon--but I couldn't come close to the detail in this little book! I can't wait to watch the shows again, and read along to catch every little reference. Fun for all Sherlock fans--and all Obsessive-Compulsives who need to know absolutely everything about Holmes.

Great book for Holmes fans
By Tom Knapp
Valerie Estelle Frankel is far more invested in the Holmesian tradition than I. In fact, one might assume she has studied the great detective's many lives under a magnifying glass, deerstalker cap firmly planted on her head.

Her book is an exhaustive bit of research. She examines the particulars of the BBC series starring Benedict Cumberbatch as Holmes and Martin Freeman as his erstwhile companion, Dr. John Watson, and she relates every plot twist, every minor character, every tiny clue and textual reference to Doyle's original work, as well as the various classic screen portrayals. I suspect the reading would be a little dry if you saw down and read the book through -- unless, I suppose, you are a true Holmes fanatic. I instead kept the book handy, and each day I read one or two chapters, most connected to a single episode and its many references.

Frankel examines each episode's title, its story, connections to canon, locations, innuendo (are Holmes and Watson more than friends?), ties to the actors' outside work and references to pop and British culture, such as the closely connected series Doctor Who and The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and the protagonists' work on The Hobbit.

It's a little daunting to see how much work the show's makers put into these little Easter eggs for fans, and it's even more so to imagine how much time Frankel spent finding them all.

Practical, Clear, Concise
By Bryan
There's nothing I hate more than a book that's overloaded with theory and void of useful, practical, real-world-tested advice. That was not the case with Church Leadership Essentials. Well-written, engaging, funny, and loaded with quality counsel. I wish I'd had this book 15 years ago.

Into the Fire, by Linda Davies

They say your personality is set at age seven. This is the year Helen Jenks’s father left, the day after the millions went missing from the bank where he was a director. Helen never gave up her belief in her father, the familiar figure, Proustian smells, his classic BMW she now owns with that familiar smell of aftershave on rainy days, but everyone has doubts…and everyone doubts her. Did her heritage drive her to become a major player in the City’s dealing rooms, where derivatives players earn millions? The jungle of the City of London leads to the Machu Picchu trail in Peru, where Helen Jenks’s heritage becomes entwined with the world’s secret intelligence services and the biggest business of all, cocaine. Linda Davies takes you from the world’s financial centers to the mountains and jungles of Peru, where the old Incas succumbed to the conquistadores. -CRITICAL ACCLAIM FOR INTO THE FIRE- “A cracking, fast-paced thriller. Excellently researched. I thoroughly enjoyed it.”- General Sir Peter se la Billière “Excellent depiction of Peru…well-handled cliff-hanger ending.”’- Daily Express -CRITICAL ACCLAIM FOR LINDA DAVIES AND HER NOVELS- “Enough action, financial know-how and international hokey-pokey to satisfy any reader … we get an idea of the coolness, daring and imagination that go into successful high-voltage trading involving hundreds of millions.” —The New York Times “Linda Davies pops her debut thriller into the microwave and brings it to a near-instant boil…. THIS BOOK’S A CLASS ACT.” —Glamour “Davies, herself a former merchant banker, does a terrific job of explaining the inner workings of foreign-exchange markets and of creating a sense of the supercharged atmosphere in which the traders do their deals.” —People “A STYLISH AND VERY CONTEMPORARY British thriller about international finance…. This first novel by young, gorgeous, etc., former banker Linda Davies feels about as real as a James Bond movie, but it satisfies in exactly the same flashy, fast-moving way.” —Mademoiselle “FAST-PACED FUN … having worked on Wall Street and in London as a merchant banker, the thirty-year-old writer makes that world sound a whole lot more exciting than most of us give it credit for being.” —Chicago Tribune “UTTERLY FASCINATING when it deals with the giddy, high-risk manipulations of foreign-exchange traders. —Entertainment Weekly “PULSE-PUSHING YARN … Davies lobs a female dynamo into the mostly male bastions of international finance and the government agencies that stalk those who prey on the markets…. Her writing style is mellifluous, her understanding of high-stakes currency trading authoritative yet unobtrusive, and her action scenes snap—making this A FINANCIAL THRILLER WITH BULL, NOT BEAR, WRITTEN ALL OVER IT.” —Publishers Weekly “Davies captures the lure of the [foreign-exchange] game … LOOK FOR THIS ONE TO BE BIG.” —USA Today “THIS GRIPPING READ reveals a flashy merchant class and a moral void—akin to an upholstered pit in a gambling casino … the game of fast-track money deals is as much an aphrodisiac as power and forbidden sex in this financial thriller.” —Kirkus Reviews

Good story, but erratic pacing
By John Forman
I read the author's first book, Nest of Vipers, years ago - multiple times actually, but not recently so the memory is a bit hazy. In concept, however, the books are similar from the perspective of starting the heroine off in a markets context and having something there trigger the thriller aspect to unfold. My impression is there's less financial markets stuff in this story (not that one really needs to understand the markets to follow the story), but perhaps a bit more action. I think the general story here is a good one. There are interesting elements and lots of good action. There are some issues with pacing, though. At times the story moves along quite quickly while at others it gets a little be plodding.

As an aside, the book was originally published in 2007. It's interesting to read a pre-Financial Crisis perspective on the financial markets, even in a limited scope. That datedness, though, may distract some readers who are familiar with market developments since.

A dark past. A dangerous secret. A deadly disappearance.

Samantha Beckett doesn’t have the luxury of selfishness. What she has is a four-year-old sister whom nobody knows exists, a sister she must keep safe. And that responsibility is just enough to keep her head above the tumultuous waters of their mother's rage. Then one stormy spring day Samantha comes face to face with her worst nightmare, and she knows that her world will never be the same.

By the time Samantha discovers the truth, it's too late. Now she must risk her own life not only to rescue her sister, but to keep them both alive.

Bring your lunch and dinner when you start reading this one
By Richard Ferguson
In this well-written, taut, emotional story, the depth of the characters is spell-binding. The bad guy is truly evil. The story itself, while unpredictable, has an aura of inevitability which keeps you wondering, even dreading, how it might end. Without giving anything away, it has a very satisfactory conclusion. Having finished it, it reminds me of a combination of Stephen King's "Carrie" and John Le Carre's "Little Drummer Girl," and that's high praise from me. Definitely 5 stars and definitely a recommended read.

Fear of unknown authors? take a chance, take if from me, its a brilliant read
By read-along-with-sue
I do not know why this books hasn't got more reviews. If you have it to read, bump it up your TBR list, if you haven't got it, buy it. I thoroughly enjoyed this read, the author Rachael Isaccson is a very good story teller. I was hooked on her every sentence.

I am not going to give much away about the book as the blurb should definitely get your interested enough to read it.

Samantha [Sam] is a young child who has had to grow up fast to look out for her three year old sister Daisy. Their Mother is an utter waste of space. But this story is MORE than just neglected children, yes, yes, books like this have been written before, except, there is an underlying hidden piece of information about the Mother that doesn't come out until toward the end. Its more of a thriller to me of sorts.

I absolutely loved the book. I would urge anyone to read it and dare to say that they didn't get pulled in by little Daisy and her cute obedient ways, and her little voice you hear in your head that belongs to this sweet little girl.

For Sam, the one who has to be resilient. The strong one, I admired her so much.

The hidden underlying things that came out, happened and topics brought out of what happens in real life......makes you think.

My thanks goes to the author for allowing me to read this book as my insistence! I loved it

Feel-good fairytale-style thriller defies reality
By Kathy Cunningham
Rachael Isaacson's STOLEN DAISY has an interesting premise - young sisters Samantha and Daisy Beckett are being raised by an abusive, vengeful mother when three-year-old Daisy goes missing. Samantha is convinced that her mother is behind Daisy's disappearance, and her teacher Carly Chandler and police detective Teddy Brody work round-the-clock to try and recover the missing girl. But the man who has Daisy may be more insidious than any of them imagine. Can Carly and Brody stop him before Samantha falls victim to the same fate as her sister? The story sounds promising. Unfortunately, it's more fairytale than crime story, which undermines the very power it could have had.

STOLEN DAISY really is a fairytale, complete with a Cinderella-style heroine and villains painted as black as any devil or wicked witch. Twelve-year-old Samantha is your quintessential fairytale waif - she has nothing but dirty rags to wear, her toothbrush has only a few bristles left, and there hasn't been running water in the house in ages, much less soap or shampoo. Her drunken witch of a mother, Beth, keeps herself stocked in frilly undergarments and booze while her children go hungry. The kids at school torment Samantha mercilessly, poking fun at her messy hair, dirty clothes, and broken eyeglasses. The only thing Samantha has is little Daisy, and she has put her entire life into protecting the girl from the evils of Mama Beth. So when Daisy disappears, it's no wonder Samantha can't cope.

The bad guys in this novel are as bad as they come. Beth is a cartoonish caricature of every evil step-mother in every story out there. She's totally heartless, cruel, and "selfishly evil," wanting nothing more than to rid herself of the burden of caring for two children (think the rotten mother in "Hansel and Gretel"). At one point, Beth actually "cackles." The male villain, Terry, gives Beth a run for her money in the rotten department. I could almost see him twirling his mustache as he mouthed lines like, "Keep your mouth shut and your legs open!" At one point, he is described as having "demonic claws thirsting for the sweet innocence of a child." This isn't a man, it's the devil.

If the bad guys are totally bad, the good guys are totally good. Carly Chandler, the loving teacher who steps in to help Samantha after Daisy's abduction, is a human fairy-godmother, complete with a perfect house, tons of money, and "Heaven-like beauty." Even her best friend, Todd, is "absolutely perfect in every way" (he even has a little dog named "Hope"). Similarly, Detective Brody is a saint, and of course he falls for Carly and Samantha pretty much the first time he sees them. There's a woman named Angel who ends up playing the Nancy role from "Oliver" (you know, the abused woman who stands by her man, until she can't stomach it one minute longer) - you can tell from her name which side of things she'll eventually choose.

STOLEN DAISY isn't an awful novel, and if you like your stories very black-and-white, it might work for you. Daisy is sweet (very, very sweet), Samantha is courageous and dedicated (she's dedication personified!), Carly and Brody are destined to be together (it's a love-at-first-sight thing for both of them, even though they fight it), and the bad guys get what they deserve (of course they do!). But if you're looking for a nuanced story, or characters that have any depth at all, or a story that isn't so by-the-numbers that you can see every development long before it happens, then look elsewhere. STOLEN DAISY is orchestrated to make readers feel good. The problem is, the novel is dealing with some very important and serious issues - including abuse, child trafficking, and parental neglect - and its over-the-top Good vs. Evil style (note the capital letters) doesn't lend itself to a reality-based story. But STOLEN DAISY is about as far from reality as you can get. If that's what you're looking for in a thriller, give this one a try. It really didn't work for me.

[Please note: I was provided a copy of this novel for review; the opinions expressed here are my own.]

The three novels featuring her — Speak Daggers to Her (1994), The Book of Moons (1995), and The Bowl of Night (1996) were collected in the omnibus volume Bell, Book, and Murder. Failure of Moonlight contains all the short stories and novellas featuring Bast. Burden of Guilt appears here in its first mass-market publication.

New (to me) Bast stories!
By Kathleen Cobcroft
I was very excited to stumble across this compilation - as advertised, there's a few hard to get short stories, and also an explanatory note about how she came to write about Bast even though she didn't want to pick up yet another genre. I bought the ebook and read through them all this morning in a fit of bookish debauchery.

Best enjoyed by people who have read at least one of the Bast mysteries, but there's enough background for newbies to pick up what's going on.

Well worth it
By Kelly (Fantasy Literature)
Failure of Moonlight is a collection of three short stories, a novella, and a brief essay starring Bast, the snarky New York Wiccan protagonist of Rosemary Edghill's BAST mystery series. All four of the fiction pieces have appeared elsewhere, but this is the first time they've been published together. Failure of Moonlight is only available currently as an e-book, is quite affordable as I write this, and is well worth the price.

"Advice from a Young Witch to an Old Priestess" originally appeared in the anthology Maiden, Matron, Crone edited by Martin H. Greenberg and Kerrie Hughes. I had not previously read this story. This story fills in some background about Bast's early years in New York, her relationship with Lark, and how she came to know Belle. It gives some insights into how she formed her personal ethical code and why she felt so uneasy about having the power of rejection over Miriam and Ned in the novels. It's a quick read and breezes along quickly through its timeline, but you'll come away from it with a weird combination of feeling like you know Bast better than before, and feeling like you still don't quite know her. She's a character who keeps a lot to herself.

"A Winter's Tale" was first printed in Denise Little's anthology The Magic Shop. Bast is helping Lark unpack some boxes at the Snake, New York's tackiest occult shop, when they find an unusual object that reminds Lark of a creepy anecdote about his time out West. This is an eerie little story that I recently read on Edghill's blog -- in fact, it was by finding this story that I found her blog, clicked around, and learned of the existence of Failure of Moonlight.

"The Iron Bride" appeared in Words of the Witches, edited by Yvonne Jocks. I read that anthology, and "The Iron Bride," some years ago, but I reread the story and liked it better this time around. I think I was disappointed, back then, that it wasn't really a mystery (there's only one suspect), and it fit oddly with the other stories in the anthology. Rereading it, I was able to appreciate it more for what it was, which is not exactly a mystery but a philosophical look at how people deal with finding out things they don't want to know. The phrase "iron bride" refers to truth, and in this story both the murderer and Bast have to deal with inconvenient truths. It's a good story, and a thought-provoking one.

The novella, "Burden of Guilt," originally appeared in Mystery in Mind, a collection of paranormal stories that was put out by the Rhine Research Center. Here is the most awesome thing about Failure of Moonlight: the longest story in it is also the one you're least likely to have already read, since Mystery in Mind was rather obscure. So, even if you've devoured the other three, you're getting a big hearty Bast story for a low price. In "Burden of Guilt," Bast is roped into vending the Snake's wares at a chi-chi New Age convention, the fluffiness of which is hilarious when viewed through Bast's cynical eyes. And then, because Bast is rather like a Wiccan version of Jessica Fletcher, of course someone is murdered. Like some of the other BAST tales, there aren't a lot of potential suspects and there aren't a ton of twists; the focus is more on what the crime tells Bast about the dark side of human nature.

Edghill ends the book with a short essay, written around the same time she wrote Speak Daggers to Her, which explains a little about how she got the idea and came to put it to paper. She also talks a little about the type of detective she sees Bast as, and why.

If you have not yet read the BAST mystery trilogy (omnibus: Bell, Book, and Murder: The Bast Mysteries), you should read that first, as there's at least one major spoiler in Failure of Moonlight. But then after you've done that, definitely check out this collection to get some more insight into the character, along with some chills and some laughs. And if you've already read the trilogy, what are you waiting for?

Failure of Moonlight
By Bootigs
I've enjoyed following the adventures of Bast and have read the three novel written by Rosemary Edgehill. I knew when I purchased the book, that I had read some of the stories in other anthologies. It was was wonderful to have them in one book and a treat to read the novella. The main character in the stories is Bast, a contemporary witch who resides in New York. All of the stories and the 3 novels (which can be purchased in one book, Bell, Book and Murder) contain murder and mystery for Bast to solve. They are also her continuing story of growth within her Craft and Coven. Many of the characters are in all of the stories which can make them a little confusing if you have not followed Bast from the beginning. There is a lot about Bast herself that remains a mystery. I sincerely hope Ms Edgehill plans a new Bast novel in the future. She certainly knows the elements of well-written mystery.
